The ATH-M40x is a series of over-the-ear wired headphones for professional tracking, mixing, and monitoring. Audio-Technica, a Japanese company in Machida, Tokyo, produced the M40x. The ATH-M40x was released in February 2014. It was considered a higher-end model within the series, with a more neutral sound and a detachable cable.

The M40x has 40 mm drivers tuned flat for better sound quality in different frequency ranges. Over-the-ear for better sound isolation in loud areas. The ear cups are designed to swivel 90° for one ear listening. The ear pad and headband are made with more durable material for comfort. The headphones are collapsible for better storage and have a detachable cable (1.2 m - 3.0 m coiled cable and 3.0 m straight cable).

Customer reviews for the ATH-M40x headphones were mixed. While many praised their performance, negative reviews highlighted issues such as audio loss over time, particularly on one side, and distorted sound. These problems were commonly reported with this model.

The Audio-Technica ATH-M40x comes in black and has a sturdy build with a foldable design. It comes with two detachable cables, a 3.9 to 9.8’ coiled cable, and a 9.8’ straight cable. It also has the Audio-Technica logo on the ear cups. The Audio-Technica ATH-M40x has silver logos on the outside, surrounded by a white ring, unlike the ATH-M50x and ATH-M30x. The ATH-M40x also has black hinges, unlike the ATH-M70x.
