Background

The Philips Respironics BiPAP Auto SV is a bilateral positive airway pressure (BiPAP) device that helps to support breathing conditions such as sleep apnea or COPD. It is a noninvasive ventilator, meaning that it can be used in non-medical and medical settings.

The Auto SV was released in January 2010. It is manufactured to be lightweight and easily portable. The device works to reduce airway obstructions and to promote breathing if respiration slows or stops. It can be purchased with a heated humidifier, which helps to mimic the natural introduction of air moisture that typically occurs with respiration.

Some insurance companies provide compensation for BiPAP machines such as this one. Without insurance, the price ranges anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 depending on a variety of factors.

The Philips Respironics BiPAP Auto SV is currently restricted by the FDA in the United States. In 2021, it and other BiPAP and CPAP machines produced by the company entered a Class 1 FDA recall. Some of the materials that composed these machines were found to break down and produce dangerous chemicals. Philips Respironics is in the process of sending replacement machines to any consumers who own a faulty product. These machines are still available in other countries.
