Background
The Welch Allyn SureTemp Plus is a clinical-grade thermometer created by Welch Allyn, Inc. The SureTemp Plus series has two models, the SureTemp Plus 690 and the SureTemp Plus 692. The SureTemp Plus provides thermometer can make oral, auxiliary, and rectal temperature measurements for adult, pediatric, and newborn patients. The thermometer can provide fast and accurate measurements utilizing algorithms in its predictive mode. It is also capable of constantly monitoring the patient’s temperature for a set period of time in the monitoring mode. The SureTemp Plus also features a recall button, allowing for the recalling of last temperature measured by the device. It is equipped with a reusable probe as well as as well as a box of up to 25 disposable covers to prevent cross-contamination between patients. The LCD monitor makes identification of temperature taking mode simple and provides useful information on any errors occurring with the device. The 690 model has the option of a wall mount, while the 692 possess one by default. The 692 model also has a security mode that prevents unauthorized removal from the mount. The SureTemp Plus is meant only to be used by healthcare practitioners, and is not intended for civilian use.
The SureTemp Plus 690/692 does not protect against liquids, so cleaning should be done with a healthcare disinfecting wipe. When mounted on a wall, the device should be at least 4" away from any other objects and no more than 4' from the ground to prevent possible damage. Batteries should be removed from the device if stored for extended periods of time to prevent damage from battery leakage. The device should be kept in an environment of between 50°-104° F. The thermometer should not be used in close proximity to other electrical equipment or in an environment of electromagnetic disturbance.
A Class 2 recall was initiated on December 30, 2003 by the FDA for the SureTemp oral probe due to mechanical setting errors that resulted in calibration errors. This recall was terminated on July 21, 2004.
Identification
The SureTemp Plus 690 and SureTemp Plus 692 are very similar in design and functionality, with the SureTemp Plus 692 possessing additional features not present in the previous model. The model number can be located on the back of the thermometer above the battery compartment. Both feature an LCD display that shows temperature, measuring method, and battery status. The 692 model also possess the ability to create a 7 character custom ID. Under the display is the name of the device, SureTemp Plus. Under the label, for the model 690 there are 2 small buttons beside each other with a larger button beneath them. The smaller button on the left is the Celsius/Fahrenheit switcher. The smaller button on the right is the mode selection. The larger button bellow the two is the temperature recall button. Exclusive to the model 692 is a button in between the two smaller buttons. This is the pulse timer/monitor mode button. The probe of the device is connected to the right of the device and docked into the probe well of the device at its top.
