  4. Your computer is giving you S.M.A.R.T. errors (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology). The S.M.A.R.T errors in particular mean your HDD might be failing soon, and that you need to backup your data or replace the HDD entirely.

You might also want to upgrade the actual capacity, so long as you know the replacement is compatible with the device. The HDD is not dangerous on its own, even if it's connected to a power source. Make sure to power off and disconnect the computer when you start taking your computer apart.
