Introduction

If your Lenovo ThinkPad W540 has a black, distorted, or a physically cracked screen, this guide should help you replace the display itself. Displays are important as they obviously show you what you are currently doing with the laptop. A faulty display will lead to a poor user experience to the user.

Note that this guide assumes that you have already checked that your video drivers are ok, and the display brightness is not on the lowest setting.

    • Open your laptop so that the screen is at around a 180 degree angle.

    • Using a plastic opening tool, pry open the outer frame of the display.

    • Generally, it is best practice to start from the corner first, and then guide the opening tool around the the frame.

    • Use a Phillips #00 screwdriver to unscrew the four 3 mm screws holding the display, one for each corner.

    • Once unscrewed, flip the display over the other side of the laptop (keyboard end).

    • Use a plastic spudger, safety lift the adhesive tape from the connector.

    • Do not disregard the tape from the connector entirely as you will be reusing it later.

    • This adhesive tape will be strong, remove the tape carefully to prevent damage to the display connector.

    • Safely disconnect the display from the connector.

    • Although you can use your hands to disconnect the connector, it is recommended that you use a spudger instead.
