PlayStation 5 Slim Disc Drive Replacement

Introduction

Follow this guide to replace a broken or faulty disc drive in your PlayStation 5 Slim. You can also use this guide to install a disc drive if your PlayStation doesn't have one, but you'll need a new console cover that will fit over the drive.

If you're having issues playing disc-based games, Blu-rays, or DVDs, you may need to replace your disc drive.

An internet connection is required to set up and pair your new disc drive.

Step 1

Before starting your repair:
Shut down your console and unplug all cables and accessories.
Remove any stands supporting your device and lay it down.

Step 2

The disc drive cover is secured with hooks along the back edge and clips along the front edge.
Firmly pull up the front edge of the disc drive cover to release the clips.
You'll hear distinct "pops" as the clips release.
Remove the cover.
To reinstall the cover, place the hooks into their cutouts along the rear edge and firmly press the front edge of the cover into place to re‑engage the three clips.

Step 3

Use the cutout on the bottom right corner of the disc drive to lift its right edge and disconnect it.
Remove the disc drive.

Step 4

This step shows you how to install a disc drive, which is just secured with hooks and a socket—innovative!
Place the hooks on the drive's left edge into their cutouts on the frame and lay the drive onto your PlayStation.
Firmly press the right edge into place so the disc drive connector slides into its socket on the bottom right corner.
The drive should click into place.

We really need to know a part # or approximation for the disk drive that may be compatible. As far as I understood it the PS5 Pro only had the option for a private external officially signed disk drive.

Additionally, could you recommend a replacement shell as the PS5 PRO’s original shell wouldn’t have the additional space needed to accommodate the new drive.

Hi Scott! Here is Sony's official replacement part (compatible with the PS5 Slim or Pro). It also comes with a new shell that will accommodate the disc drive.

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.

Take your e-waste to an R2 or e-Stewards certified recycler.

once a disc drive has been paired with a system , can we use the same disc drive on another ps5 system ?

Yes you can! You should be prompted to register the drive with your device, which will require an internet connection.

Yes. It is the same disc drive for PS5 Slim digital.

I'm not hearing the 'click' when I install the drive. And the PlayStation is not even detecting that a drive has been installed, I'm not getting any power to it or anything. Could it be seated incorrectly or something??

Hi Arrien! Yes, I would check that it's properly seated and make sure there's no dirt/dust/grime in the connector or socket.
