Introduction

Top cover safety interlock does not always work, but pressure on the top rear cover starts the shredder.

Cause: Over time the the top cover no longer engages the safety lockout. Due to plastics used and the plastic tabs employed wear down and give a little.

The safety cutout is a clever little bit of ingenuity but over time and use, it wears. If it was a little stronger it would be ok.

    • Remove six (6) screws. Look inside and up, they are bright in colour. These three (3) and the opposite three (3), leaving the lower six (6) untouched or the case will collapse.

    • Locate and remove six (6) recessed screws, three (3) from both sides.

    • Carefully place your hand inside and up onto the cutting blades. Lift up, and the upper unit will come away from the case.

    • Now vacuum up any paper dust and tiny shreds of paper. Small pliers or tweezers come in handy here.

    • Locate "snubber" in the red rectangle. Notice how the round plastic pin goes into the upper plastic sleeve, if you take the further steps to "go inside" and clean, the pin needs to go back here.

    • Carefully attach sticky pad to plastic "plunger" The pads were from Lidl, so I had them lying about. The small one 10mm x 1mm thin. The added thickness makes the plunger push switch actuator down further. Thats the repair done.

    • Green circle, shows the correct placement of the Start Actuator. Plastic arm moves freely to the right of switch.

    • Please check that the cutout works when the bin is out and the top cover open.

    • Remove six (6) small screws to seperate the two halves. Vacuum away and use compressed air if available, (use outside).

    • Several wires hold the two halves together, just un-clip as you go.

My problem is the feed rollers do not pick up the sheets and shred. I have to do it manually.

    Any help please

Thanks for your help. What is the cause when the Shredder will not pick up the 60X shhets and shred? Do I need to replace the 4x Rubber Rollers/ Are they available please? Thanks

Steve B New Zealand

Steve Bostin -

Hi Steve, The four rollers may glaze over, just wipe with a damp cloth. (Rubber cleaner or IPA alcohol, lens wipes).

Just looked at my tyre / rollers and the rear pair are ribbed with some wear and the front pair are ribbed but look in better condition. The tyre's are all tight on each wheel and not loose or slipping round.

I would make sure the shedder works in "manual" mode, hand feed a sheet in the top slot. Check the time out function works, then try a few flat sheets in the hopper tray. I thinks it works best if the paper to be shredded is not too glossy, stapled or clipped together. Also paper with hard creases / folds does not pick up well.

Do the rollers actually rotate ?

Check the pressure back plate is free to move onto the paper stack.

That's all I can think of right now.

Q. Is the problem not shredding or not picking up sheets or both ?

I've got a Rexel 100x shredder, if I power the machine on it only feeds the paper 1cm and switches off. Then I
power it on and it feeds the paper 1cm and powers off.

Thank you for the detailed instructions. Do you perhaps have any idea where I can purchase broken gears

Antoin -

Unfortunately, no, just check the streets people throw them away, freecycle, eBay, Amazon and local tips some here (UK) have recycle shop.

Paul -

I can help you find replacement plastic gears! Send me a message on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/usr/krunkz

Mr. Master -

I have a rexel shredder and when I put paper through it it doesnt shred the paper into small pieces. The paper is still whole with nicks in the paper. What is happening here. Do I throw it out or can I fix it?

Toni Lucas -

The paper passes between two close fitting roller blades. I cannot see how it goes in and out of the other side without being shredded.

The instructions to take one apart are above, get yourself the required tools and have a go you’ve got nothing to lose, if I can do it so can you send me some pictures? Give me some more information.

Paul -

I have done all of the above and it still not shredding into pieces. I brought another one today. This one is going in the garbage. Thank you for replying!

Toni Lucas -

Thanks Toni, good luck with the new one. The trick is not to feed too many papers at once. Follow the instructions and you’ll be good to go.

Thank you! I'm in the USA with a Swingline 60x. I looked for hours for a repair manual or pics for reference. Nothing. I stumbled across this post, and the shredder here is identical to mine. Progress!

The people who gave me the shredder said it was working fine. For me, the blue power light came on, but that's it; no sound of the motor trying to engage, etc. Maybe I jostled something out of place during transport??

So far:

- Removing paper remnants made no difference.

- Based on your pics, esp. Step 4, everything appears to be in order.

- No "burned electrical" smell, no charred components on main circuit board.

- Set to auto >, press in "snubber"/safety lock, AND move the lever to engage the start actuator. The red "temp" light comes on.

- Set to forward >>, press in snubber. Red light comes on. So, switch and start actuator are presumably working correctly.

- Maybe temperature safety-off is permanently triggered? I'm not sure yet where to find those components.

Any suggestions or next steps to try?

Kate Dahl -

Hi Kate, Thanks for stopping by. Yes your Swingline does look like the Rexel I have. If the over temp red light comes on then the motor has stalled and you could see if it's true by touch ? - careful it will be warm. Do you get a humming from the motor when stalled. Something jammed in the cutter assembly ? Does the overtime light come on immediately or after a short time ? Nothing works when the overtemp light is on.

In my case the Rexel would not run unless I pressed down on the back right hand side and an audible click could be heard, that's why I stripped it down and added an extra "shim" to the switch actuator (pin / snubber)

"Set to auto >, press in "snubber"/safety lock, AND move the lever to engage the start actuator. The red "temp" light comes on.

- Set to forward >>, press in snubber. Red light comes on. So, switch and start actuator are presumably working correctly" Is the case assembled or not, not sure what you mean?

<character count low to continue, get back if you can. Paul>

Paul -

Thanks, Paul!

I've never heard the motor. Ever. First thing I did was try to clear any jams. I spent over 8 hrs pulling out paper pieces. Nothing. (That's when I confirmed that it had been working for the people who gave it to me.)

- Assuming snubber at back right side is the safety lock, pressing it makes shredder think it's assembled.

- Shredder is unassembled. Set back/auto/forward setting using exterior switch. Manually press snubber (step 4, red) and manually move the plastic arm to trigger the start actuator (step 4, green) on the interior (i.e. same view as step 4 pic). I get the described overtemp light results immediately, even on the first try after it's been unplugged for days. If light="motor trying to run", it comes on as expected for different settings, so safety & start functions appear to be working.

- In truth, light="motor trying to run but is not due to overheating", so I'd guess next step is to find out why it thinks it's overheating when it's not. Any insights into how to do that?

Hi Kate, There are two safety interlocks, the top cover and the Bin interlock. Also an infra red sensor that gets a covering of paper dust that needs a wipe. Causes to run on.

You are welcome, Kate. Let's try to fix it. I'm here.Feel free to send pictures and I can take mine apart to double check anything. Your on 120v ac I guess so motor winding's will be different to mine but all else would be similar.

So no I don't know why the overtemp is on straight away unless something is wrong on the PCB. Take another look if you can or upload some images. Regards Paul

Hi Paul, just manged to clean a hopelessly clogged up 60X. Your post helped me figure out the purpose of the top-cover safety switch (snubber and plunger , as you call them). I winder what is the purpose of a spring that is visible just under the 'yellow arrow' on your picture.
Also, the snubber has a kind of 'thread' and a hex section - as if it was originally designed to adjust the 'depth' of the plunge. If that worked , it would save the work on attaching a sticky pad.
What do you think?
Regards and greetings from Sydney, Australia
Marek

Marek Bogatek -

Hi Marek, Yes, I see the spring you mentioned but it’s in the unit now out of sight so no, I don’t know, it was just there.

The threaded plastic nut if it rotates it could certainly prevent the use of the pad.

Hi, I love Sidney when I visited in 2007 I’m in South London UK

Paul -

Hi Paul,
I think I figured out the role of that small spring: it is a 'sensor' of the bin ! If the bin is not fully 'engaged'= pushed in, the spring pushes down the whole switch/sensor of the top cover closure that you were writing above, and that opens it up and prevents the shredder from operating. At its end, the bin has an up facing 'tongue' that fits into a slot underneath that spring and pushes the switch up, closing the contact.
A bit of clever engineering: the shredder will not work without the top cover fully screwed in, neither if the bin is not fully in.

Marek Bogatek -

Hi Paul, Sydney is calling again!
I am writing to you for the (potential) benefit of those who will find themselves in trouble with Rexel X60 (probably X100 as well).
Just finished my old bugger that, in all frankness, I found on the side of the road, ready for pickup by garbos.
A couple of final remarks:
Top cover switch: the top of the plunger is actually protruding a bit into the loading bay so one may try to put some 'extension' on it (a small blob of silicon?) so that the lid closing will push it a bit deeper and close the switch.
* My 'theory' on the role of the small spring may need revising because now my Rexel works without the bin right in. I still thing that its only purpose it to switch off power if the bin is not in, and it all worked just right before I reassembled the unit, but now , well, the shredder turn on even without a bin. Do not have time to investigate it further but at least someone with a similar problem will have some pointers what to look at.
Greetings to you and all fixers!

Marek Bogatek -

Well done for keeping the shredder out of the landfill. Yes the single interlock does a wonderful job looking after the top cover and bin safety, all in one.

Good feedback and will go assisting others in there endeavours.

Paul -

In the second photo of "remove Paper collection box" between the bottom two rollers to the right of middle screw which you have highlighted in red is a black clip. This is what has got stuck in my shredder. A credit card or CD is stiff enough to gain access to the turning rotors. Paper will not go past this. Please any suggestions as to how I might rectify this.

Stef

Stef -

Hi Stef, I have seen your question and can offer no more suggestions, can you keep going in deep to separate the cutting blades ?

Total Solutions -

Thanks for the prompt reply. I am very grateful. I am not quite sure I understand your question. Normally the black clip I mention is what I assume will actuate the cutting blades (when in Auto Mode) to turn when paper moves past it to reach the blades. If I try to shred a credit card then the credit card is stiff enough to push past the clip and reaches the blades whereupon it is shredded. The same applies to a stiff piece of cardboard or stiffer paper. The cutting blades will rotate both forward and in reverse without any problem. The problem is that paper sheets will not pass the black clip and hence are not pulled into the shredder

Does this make my problem any clearer?

Stef -

I really would be grateful if you could explain the significance of what you are asking me. Please, I am not being obtuse , I really do not understand the significance of what you are getting at with this question

"..can you keep going in deep to separate the cutting blades.."

Please, if you could explain, I might be able to work out where to go next in my attempts to solve my problem.
