How to change your car's oil in 6 steps

Changing your car's oil can be simple if you follow the right steps.

Before you even start the oil change process, consult the manufacturer's manual to determine exactly how much oil you will need. Also make sure you have an oil filter with you before starting the process.

Prepare your auto tools - such as the oil filter wrench and the oil drain plug wrench - and put on gloves to protect your hands. Now you're almost ready to start changing your car's oil. What's left? Follow the next 6 steps:

1 Buy the right oil and oil filter for your car

An inexpensive oil filter can save you money, but only for a short time as it usually doesn't last very long. To extend the life of the oil and preserve the condition of your car, use good quality filters.

Before heading to the auto parts store, consult your car manufacturer's manual and check which oil is recommended for your car's engine. It is essential that you follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding the viscosity of the oil.

2 Pull the oil cap

Start by covering the floor with plastic or cardboard so that there are no oil stains.

Then raise the car with a bottle jack or a car elevator, put the jack stands in the right place and lower the jack again.

Unscrew the plug and quickly pull it out of the oil stream.

Unscrew the plug and quickly pull it out of the oil flow. Clean the drain plug and install a new seal if necessary.

3 Remove the oil filter

Remove the old oil filter and make sure that the rubber gasket comes off with it. If not, remove it from the engine.

4 Oil filter wrenches

There are different oil filter wrenches depending on the car. Select the one that suits your car.

5 Add new oil to your car

Refill the engine with new oil, according to the manufacturer's specifications, using a funnel and cap the bottle to prevent it from spilling liquid before delivering it to the nearest recycling center.

After adding the oil, start the car and let it run until the oil light on the dashboard goes out. Wait a few minutes, check the oil dipstick and add more oil if necessary.

6 Recycle old oil

Pour the used oil into a bottle or jug and take it to a recycling center, as two out of every three liters of used oil can be reused.

You must ensure that this waste is properly treated so that it does not become harmful to the environment

Conclusion

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
